Maslow’s Need Hierarchy Theory of Motivation

 1. Motivation process is based on human needs

Maslow’s Need Hierarchy Theory of Motivation

1. Basic / Physiological Needs:

It is nothing but satisfying the basic needs like food, clothing, shelter, etc.

When this need is satisfied, he thinks for the next level of need.

Example: Basic salary helps to satisfy this need.

2. Safety / Security Needs:

These needs provide security and protection from physical and emotional harms.

Example: Job security, pension plans, insurance, stable income.

3. Affiliation / Belongingness Needs:

These needs relate to affection, belongingness, acceptableness, friendship, etc.

4. Esteem Needs:

These needs include factors like self-respect, status, recognition, and attention.

5. Self-Actualisation Needs:

It is the highest level of need in hierarchy.

This need includes growth, self-fulfilment, and achievement of goals.

Maslow’s Theory is Based on the Following Assumptions

1. People’s behaviour is based on their needs.

Satisfying such needs influences their behaviour.

2. People’s needs are in hierarchical order, starting from basic needs to other higher-level needs.

3. A satisfied need cannot motivate a person, but the next higher-level need can motivate him.

4. A person moves to the next higher-level need when the lower-level need is satisfied.
